Christine Drazan Caught in National Republican Effort to Hide Extreme Positions on Abortion

“Republican candidates around the country are trying to disappear the hardline anti-abortion stances they took during their primaries.”

[Portland, OR] – Today Axios revealed that Republican gubernatorial candidate Christine Drazan is part of a national trend they dubbed the “big scrub,” where GOP candidates around the country are trying to “disappear the hardline anti-abortion stances they took during their primaries.”

Axios reported that Drazan, like Pennsylvania’s Doug Mastriano and Arizona’s Blake Waters, “scrubbed her website’s issues page, which had previously touted pro-life bonafides.”

Pollster John Horvick also commented on Drazan’s attempt to scrub her extreme views on abortion from her website, noting that, “there is nothing about abortion on Drazan’s site now. But there was as of at least July 7th via the Wayback Machine.”

Christel Allen, Executive Director of Pro-Choice Oregon PAC set the record straight in a press conference last week:

“Drazan is endorsed by Oregon Right to Life, the same organization that is pushing for extreme abortion restrictions across the country. Drazan supported legislation in 2019 and 2020 that could have criminalized health providers for providing abortion care. Drazan says she doesn’t have the power to roll back our rights as Governor. I’m here today to tell you that this is absolutely not true.”

Allen also laid out several ways Drazan could block progress and roll back access to care if she’s elected:

“An anti-abortion governor like Drazan could stack the courts with anti-abortion judges, who could then be appointed to higher and higher courts and play decisive roles in the generational fight to restore our reproductive rights.

“An anti-abortion governor like Drazan could appoint anti-abortion agency leaders who would have the power to end programs and partnerships that the state currently has with clinics and other organizations that are providing essential reproductive health services across the state.

“And, an anti-abortion governor like Drazan could veto bills or budgets that aim to expand access to abortion, birth control, and sex education.”

“Reproductive rights are under attack nationwide and on the ballot here in Oregon,” said Katie Wertheimer, Tina for Oregon communications director. “Tina Kotek is the only candidate for Governor endorsed by Planned Parenthood PAC of Oregon, Pro-Choice Oregon, and The Mother PAC because she is the only candidate reproductive rights leaders trust to defend our rights to control our own bodies.”
