New Poll Shows “Vast Majority” of Oregonians Support Gun Violence Prevention Efforts

Christine Drazan and Betsy Johnson Out-of-Step with Voters on Guns, Both Have “A” Ratings from NRA

[Portland, OR] – New data released this week by the Oregon Values and Beliefs Center shows that the “vast majority” of Oregonians believe in gun violence prevention legislation, which solidifies the dynamics of this year’s governor’s race in Tina Kotek’s favor.

More than a third of Oregonians said they are more likely to vote in November as a result of the recent mass shootings.

Tina is the only candidate for Governor who has had the courage to stand up to the gun lobby. As House Speaker, Tina championed legislation to expand background checks on gun purchases – a common-sense safety measure that 88% of Oregonians support, according to the new poll.

Republican Christine Drazan voted against requiring guns to be stored safely, which is a proven strategy to prevent accidental gun deaths among children. If elected, she said she would veto any gun safety measures.

Conservative candidate Betsy Johnson has earned her reputation as a “machine-gun toting darling of GOP megadonors” for her long record of voting against gun violence prevention. Johnson voted against safety measures with extremely widespread support, including universal background checks on gun sales and preventing convicted domestic abusers and stalkers from buying guns.

Drazan and Johnson both earned A ratings from the NRA. Meanwhile, Tina is endorsed by Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and Giffords PAC.

“Drazan and Johnson’s views on guns are out of step with most Oregonians,” said Katie Wertheimer, communications director. “The results from this latest poll confirm that Oregonians overwhelmingly support common-sense efforts to reduce gun violence. Tina is the only candidate who will stand up to the NRA and work to make our communities safer.”
