Senator Merkley: Drazan and Johnson are Out of Step with Oregonians’ Values on Environmental Protections, Climate Chaos

Merkley Urges Oregonians to Support Tina Kotek for Governor

[Portland, OR] – Today U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley urged Oregonians to support Democratic nominee Tina Kotek for Governor at a press conference in downtown Portland.

“Both Christine Drazan and Betsy Johnson are taking massive checks from big oil and corporate polluters, like the Koch Brothers. And they have both made it their goal to block climate chaos legislation,” Sen. Merkley said.

In the legislature, both Drazan and Johnson have failed records on the environment:

  • They both voted against a bill to set clean diesel standards for trucks (HB 2007, 2019).
  • They both voted against a bill that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move Oregon to 100% clean by 2040. (HB 2021, 2021).
  • Both of them even voted against providing relief for low-income Oregonians who needed help paying their utility bills. (HB 2475, 2021).

And, as House Republican Leader, Drazan led her caucus to walk off the job to prevent the legislature from taking action on climate change. Now, Drazan is campaigning on a promise to undo efforts already in place to reduce our state’s carbon emissions.

“Tina Kotek is the only candidate who will keep working to reduce our carbon pollution and do our part to fight climate chaos,” Sen. Merkley added.

“As Governor, Tina will keep fighting alongside our partners like Senator Merkley to fight climate change, protect our natural environment, and create clean energy jobs,” said Katie Wertheimer, communications director for the Tina Kotek campaign. “Christine Drazan’s right-wing record of supporting abortion bans, ties to violent extremists, and opposition to environmental protections will be deal breakers for many voters in Oregon.”
