Medford Debate Recap: Question About First-Year Goals Reveals Major, Defining Contrast in Governor’s Race

Only Tina Kotek Promised to Deliver Results on Homelessness, Mental Health, Addiction Crises

[Medford, OR] – In tonight’s debate at KOBI News, the three candidates for Governor were asked: “What will you guarantee you will accomplish in your first year?” Only Tina Kotek committed to delivering results on two of Oregon’s biggest crises: homelessness, and addiction and mental health.

Tina, the Democratic nominee for Governor, said:

“In the first year of my administration, there will be fewer people living on the streets. Our neighbors need to get off the streets, and we need to help them get there. There will be more transitional shelters. There will be more people working daily, everyday, tent by tent, working with individuals who are living on the street. We will be on a pathway to build more housing across our state because we have a housing and homelessness crisis across our state.

“And the dollars that are promised to improve addiction and mental health treatment services in the state – in every corner of our state, we will have better outcomes to show for it.”

Meanwhile, Republican nominee Christine Drazan promised to roll back environmental protections and made a vague allusion to national Republican concerns.

And conservative Betsy Johnson repeated her stunning commitment to veto any legislation that doesn’t have Republican support. As The Oregonian recently pointed out, that means Johnson would have vetoed landmark legislation in recent years including: guaranteeing the right to abortion, ensuring paid sick leave for workers, raising the minimum wage, boosting funding for public schools, and requiring people to securely store their guns.

“Tonight’s debate leaves no doubt: Tina Kotek is the only person with a serious, urgent plan of action to address Oregon’s housing and homelessness crisis,” said Katie Wertheimer, communications director. “While Drazan and Johnson are repeating vague, conservative promises, Tina is ready to deliver results that will improve the lives of Oregonians across the state.”
