Week in Review: Rolling Stone Blasts Betsy Johnson as “Machine-Gun Toting Darling of GOP Megadonors”

In Other News: Reproductive Rights Advocates Urge Oregon Voters to Support Tina Kotek for Governor, Drazan and Johnson are Out-of-Touch with most Voters on Guns

[Portland, OR] – Rolling Stone brought national attention to the Oregon governor’s race on Monday, labeling Betsy Johnson as the “machine-gun toting darling of GOP megadonors.”

Reporter Tim Dickinson scorched Johnson on many fronts, including her: “unabashed cronyism,” ties to a January 6th extremist, Trump-like refusal to release her tax returns, extreme record on guns, and efforts to block climate legislation while accepting donations from big oil and gas companies including Koch Industries.

More highlights from this powerful story are available HERE.

On Wednesday, the eve of Idaho’s near-total abortion ban going into effect, reproductive rights advocates made the case for electing Tina Kotek as Oregon’s next governor at a press conference in downtown Portland.

Leaders from Planned Parenthood PAC of Oregon, Pro-Choice Oregon, and The Mother PAC explained why Tina is the only candidate they trust to defend and expand access to reproductive care.

In the clearest terms yet, Pro-Choice Oregon’s executive director, Christel Allen, laid out how Republican Christine Drazan and conservative candidate Betsy Johnson could threaten access to care in Oregon if either of them are elected.

Listen to Allen break down the stakes for abortion access in November HERE.

From KGW: “Abortion rights advocates gather in Portland to denounce Idaho ban

“Democratic candidate for Oregon governor Tina Kotek joined reproductive rights advocates at the press conference Wednesday. She said that the ban in Idaho will impact people who live in Eastern Oregon, close to the Idaho border.

“‘Even though abortion is legal and in-statute here in Oregon, we must step in and help our neighbors,’ said Kotek.

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Oregon, anticipated a 234% increase in out-of-state patients coming to Oregon if the ban were to go into effect.”

From KOIN: “Kotek speaks in support of abortion access

“The event was meant to highlight the stakes for abortion access in November. It’s taking place a day before Idaho enacts a near-total ban on abortion.

“‘Tomorrow, our neighbors will lose the fundamental right to make decisions about their bodies and their futures,’ Kotek said at the press conference.

“Kotek said she fought for abortion access in Oregon while serving in the House of Representatives because she knew there would come a time when Supreme Court judges appointed by President Donald Trump would overturn Roe v. Wade.”

New data released this week by the Oregon Values and Beliefs Center shows that the “vast majority” of Oregonians believe in gun violence prevention legislation, and more than a third are more likely to vote in November as a result of the recent mass shootings.

The gun safety polling is the latest evidence that Tina is the only candidate for governor aligned with voters on the issues they care most about.

As House Speaker, Tina championed legislation to expand background checks on gun purchases – a common-sense safety measure that 88% of Oregonians support, according to the new poll. Meanwhile, Christine Drazan and Betsy Johnson both have extreme views on guns that have won them “A” ratings from the NRA but place them firmly out-of-step with most Oregon voters.
